I'm a freelance writer, sub, editor and blogger with over 20 years
experience in print, digital and online. I spent eight years learning my
trade at Future Publishing in Bath - during that time I worked on a
variety of roles across different magazines honing my writing, editing,
subbing and management skills.
Since 2003 I've been freelance, and have now written for over 50 print and digital magazines worldwide for nine different publishers. I currently write for Windows Help & Advice, Linux Format, MacFormat, iPad User, Blues News, Who Do You Think You Are? Magazine and Your Family History, but have also had work published in the likes of Computeractive, BBC Countryfile, SFX, T3, PC Answers, and PC Plus.
I've also written extensively for a wide number of tech-based websites: MSN Tech & Gadgets, CNET, Live-Smart, TechRadar, LifeHacker UK and Betanews among them.
I also wrote and helped produce an app, Tips & Tricks for Windows 8 and its followup (Tips & Tricks for Windows 8.1) for Intelligenti.com - it's available for Windows 8/8.1 PCs, and user feedback includes, "Slick - nice and well written."
I'm also the author of the Twitter Marketing Playbook, an exhaustive 358-page guide for businesses looking to master Twitter as a marketing platform. As a direct result of this work I was made responsible for subbing, styling and editing all subsequent playbooks: "Nick's approach to writing has been an imperative in the ongoing development of all Imparture playbooks to date." I continue to contribute to Imparture in various ways: slide deck production, case study writing and trainer bios among them.
I've also written for a variety of blogs, including 1&1 Internet, Imparture, and most recently ASUS.
I have also undertaken written and editing work for a number of commercial clients, including Dell, Vodafone, Nissan, The National Trust, Advent Computers and the PC World chain of superstores.
In all, I've written well over 5,000 pages of copy since 1994, and currently average the equivalent of over 400 pages per year.
This web site is aimed at both those who enjoy my articles and commissioning editors who may be interested in offering me work. I specialise in writing computing articles - mostly tips, tutorials and technical support, but have also written on subjects as diverse as technology, football, genealogy, history and environmental matters.
I pride myself on making sure my articles are tested, accurate and easy to follow - an editor recently commissioned me for a cover feature, "because our readers find your style very clear and accessible" while another magazine praised me for a recent submission with the following: " Great work as always, Nick. Fast, efficient, clean and on time."
I have also provided limited technical support for a number of magazines over the past ten years, which helps me to stay in touch with readers, both in terms of helping them solve problems and discovering what kind of articles interest them.
